Hoisin Meatballs Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey, chicken, or pork)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the hoisin glaze:

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Hoisin Meatballs Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to knead the mixture until it’s well combined.
  3. Roll the meat mixture into small balls, about 1-2 inches in diameter, and place them on the prepared baking sheet. You should get about 24-28 meatballs.
  4. Bake the meatballs for 15-20 minutes, or until they’re cooked through and golden brown.
  5. While the meatballs are cooking, make the glaze by combining the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, minced garlic, rice vinegar, and sesame oil in a small saucepan. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it’s thickened and bubbly.
  6. Once the meatballs are done, remove them from the oven and brush them with the glaze. Make sure to coat each meatball evenly.
  7. Place the meatballs back in the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the glaze is sticky and caramelized.
  8. Once the meatballs are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Hoisin Meatballs Tips:

  • If you want to make the meatballs ahead of time, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Just bake them as instructed, let them cool completely, and then freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once they’re frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag and store them in the freezer until you’re ready to use them.
  • You can customize the flavor of the meatballs by adding different spices or herbs to the mixture. Try adding some chopped cilantro, green onions, or ginger for a more Asian-inspired flavor.
  • If you’re serving these meatballs as an appetizer, you can skewer them with toothpicks for a fun and easy-to-eat presentation.
